EVENT CALENDAR – TOKYO, JULY 219 (part 2)

KAGURAZZAK FESTIVAL
Dates: July 24-27.

Venue: Kagurazaka, Tokyo.

The calm area of Kaguradzak is known for its sophistication. Once upon a time, it was a geisha quarter known for its rich history. And to this day, it still retains the atmosphere of bygone days – paved roads, picturesque alleys with tea houses and other historical places, among which modern shops and cafes have perfectly taken root.

Every year, at the end of July, Kaguradzaka celebrates its largest festival with all kinds of events: here you will find a market that sells hodzuki (lantern plants), exciting fishing for goldfish and other traditional games, and much more. Put on a festival in yukata and you can get discounts, free and other special offers from some establishments.

Do not miss the Ava Odori dance competition held on the last two days of the festival. Ava Odori is a dance that is usually performed in the summer to greet the spirits of deceased loved ones. Now this is a beautiful festive dance procession, to which everyone can join.

ACE FESTIVAL IN SHINJUKU
Date: July 27.

Location: Shinjuku, Tokyo.

This is a great chance to see ace – the traditional dance of Okinawa, without going to Okinawa itself. During the performance of the ace, they dance and sing to the accompaniment of drums and sanshin (a three-string Okinawan instrument). This is a fun, colorful and very energetic sight. The Ace festival is different in dynamics and sound from the rest of the Japanese holidays, and the various dance teams performing at this festival will surely not disappoint you. This is one of the most popular summer festivals in Tokyo, so do not be surprised if a large crowd gathers. Try to arrive early to take a comfortable place.
